Using the Piper's Metronome™ and a new Challenge

The Short Version

If you don't know your target tempo, tap it out or pick a skill level — you don't need to already know the number. The tap feature measures the tempo of your own taps, and the built-in skill levels pick an appropriate tempo automatically based on how a beginner through a top professional would actually play that specific tune style.
Almost every timing problem I see in pipers is the same one: playing gracenotes and doublings just ahead of the beat instead of starting them right on it. The ring-style display makes this immediately visible — a gracenote or doubling should start exactly on the click, not finish there, and watching where your embellishments land relative to the beat is often more revealing than you'd expect.
The metronome is often a diagnostic tool for problems that aren't really timing problems at all. A recurring rush or drag in one specific spot is frequently a fingering issue in disguise — the metronome just makes the symptom visible, and finding it is the first step to fixing the actual root cause.
