The bottom number of a time signature can only be certain note values. It always refers to a real type of note — quarter, eighth, and so on — so understanding what that number actually represents is the key to decoding any unusual time signature you come across.
You can move seamlessly between tunes that share a bottom number. If the bottom number matches, you can transition directly from a 4/4 tune into another 4/4 tune, or from a 6/8 tune into another 6/8 tune, even if the top number and the tune's overall feel are completely different.
Composers sometimes write in unusual meters purely as a creative challenge. Not every unusual time signature reflects some deep musical necessity — some, like a tune deliberately built around 1/4 or 10/8, exist because a composer set out to see if they could pull off a genuine mathematical and musical puzzle.
