The Tunes of Robert Burns — January 20, 2022

The Short Version

Pipe music is often printed for convenience, not scientific accuracy — and Scots Wha Hae and Amazing Grace are the two clearest examples. Both are commonly written in a time signature that looks tidy on paper but isn't how anybody actually plays them. Scots Wha Hae's real feel is a two-to-one 6/8 pattern even where an old book shows a nine-to-one dot cut, and Amazing Grace is really 9/8 dressed up in 3/4 clothing.
One reversed rhythm pattern in Corn Rigs Are Bonnie is the single most misplayed figure in all of piping. Almost every dot-cut pair in piping puts the long note first. When a tune reverses that — short note landing on the beat instead of the dot — players unconsciously convert it back to the familiar shape, which is exactly the mistake worth training your ear to catch.
A tune ending on D instead of low A sounds brighter and happier, and that's true of Corn Rigs. Only about five percent of competition-style 2/4s end on the five (D) rather than the one (low A). The handful that end on B instead lean minor and moody, the way Mist Covered Mountains does.
