There's a real process to tuning your own drones, and once you have one, almost anybody can do it. I start by matching one tenor to low A, and every later step builds on the one before it — random button-pushing between drones is what actually makes tuning feel impossible.
A chanter reed's pitch rises with warmth and then gets pulled back down by moisture, and a properly humidified reed levels off fast instead of climbing forever. A reed that starts pre-humidified rather than bone dry should be sounding good within five minutes and really good within ten.
