Bagpipe Fundamentals: How to strike in your pipes cleanly every time.

The Short Version

Striking in gets all your drone reeds started at exactly the same moment. Just inflating the bag can bring the drones in raggedly with squealing and weird sounds, especially with cane reeds, so a proper strike-in avoids that.
The trick is filling the bag just short of the drones sounding, then striking and blowing together. You want enough air in the bag that it has shape but the drones haven't spoken yet, then a firm elbow strike combined with blowing brings them in together on their first tone.
There's no need to rush once the drones are speaking their first tone. The most common mistake is losing pressure while repositioning the bag under your arm — keep blowing and keep the bag tension up as you get everything into position.
