🌗 The Half Doubling

The lighter, one-grace-note cousin of the full doubling — and the moments it needs to become the full thing.

⚡ The Short Version

A half doubling has one gracenote instead of two. Where a full F doubling is high G, F, high G, a half doubling from high G to F plays only one of those gracenotes. It is a real, lighter version of the movement, not a mistake.

Coming from high G, the full version needs the thumb. Alasdair Gillies edited one of my tune settings by crossing out a half doubling from high G to F and writing in the full doubling with its thumb gracenote instead — an upgrade, not a correction of an error.

If the note and a half doubling both come out clean but the full doubling doesn't, that's not a difficulty problem — it's tension. A plain F and a half F doubling only ask one gracenote of you at a time. A full doubling asks for two gracenotes back to back, and leftover tension in the first one is usually what blocks the second.
