🌊 The Crunluath

The fullest of piobaireachd's theme-note variations — two low G's and two low A's built around gracenotes, landing on a short E.

The Short Version

The crunluath is built from four theme notes. Two low G's and two low A's, framed by gracenotes and finishing on a short E — the fullest member of the leumluath/taorluath/crunluath family of piobaireachd variations.
The crunluath a mach only exists on B, C and D. It isn't a variant of the conventional crunluath — on D it's a completely different shape: G gracenote, B, D throw, open edre, with no taorluath movement in it at all.
Even beats before speed. The two low G's and two low A's have to be even for the movement to sound right. That comes from a dedicated progression exercise built slow, with soft hands — not from playing it fast over and over and hoping it clicks.

⭐ Essential Highlights

“The crunluath breabach does this beautiful little thing by adding in two extra connector notes. If it was just a conventional crunluath, these two notes wouldn't be there. But when you add in these two extra notes, you get this really beautiful rolling rhythmic pattern. It's not so much a different embellishment — in fact, it's the identical embellishment — but it adds in a really cool little rhythmic effect by adding in these two connector notes.”▶ 58:38 · Piobaireachd Embellishments
“In the leumluath, that short note is an E. In the crunluath, that short note is an E. In the taorluath variation, that short note is a low A. Those ending notes usually don't change; the notes that change are the melody notes, the theme notes.”▶ 15:02 · Piobaireachd Embellishments
“The key is that the E gracenote right in the middle of that crunluath still has to land on the third beat. So the two low G's come before that third beat, and the two low A's come right after it — but then the thing kind of gets compressed from both sides, like a trash compactor.”▶ 36:09 · Get the Pipes Out — May 2024
