🖐️ Hand Position and Posture

Where the fingers and thumbs go, why the wrists matter more than people think, and the good-form habits that make every technique built on top of them possible.

The Short Version

Ring finger and thumb first on top, pinky and index first on bottom — never feel around with your fingertips. On the top hand: ring finger on the first pad, then thumb, then drop the other two straight down. On the bottom hand: pinky on the hole, then index finger on the second pad, then drop the other two. That two-step landing is the position — searching for the holes with your fingertips builds a habit you'll have to undo later.
A bent wrist is the most common posture problem, and it almost always traces back to the thumb. If your thumb sits too high, or reaches too far past the chanter, your wrist has to bend to compensate. I check for this by looking for wrinkled skin at the wrist crease — a neutral, straight wrist is what you see in photos of every top-level player.
Relaxed beats rigid — locked-straight fingers cost you more effort, not less. Curled-around or hyperextended fingers take extra tension to hold and extra strain to move. The goal is a light, relaxed curve, minimal finger movement, and hands that stay close to the chanter rather than lifting high.

“It's really important that your wrists are in a neutral position — you don't want a big bend in your wrist. I'll see this quite often: your fingers are in the right spot, but your thumb goes too far past the chanter, and the only way to do that is to put a big bend in the wrist. If you look down and you see wrinkled-up folds of skin on the wrist, that means you're bending it. You want it to be more in a neutral position.”▶ 20:02 · Making the Jump from Practice Chanter to Pipes
“I've got a perfect view of your wrist there, and you are at a 90-degree angle, my friend. You've got to bring — no, don't move your elbow. You need to move your wrist out, like I'm pushing from underneath. There you go. You have multiple 90-degree angles there, and you should be real straight on your wrist. That's going to be a big problem with your top hand, if you're that bent.”▶ 41:46 · Focus on the Top Hand: Speed, Control, and Fluidity
“And that often goes all the way back to the very first time they picked up a chanter: they put their fingers on the first pad, and then they wrap their thumb around. If you have a nice long thumb, it's no problem, but if you have a short thumb like me, the wrist gets a bend in it. If I unbend my wrist, my thumb is about 2 inches short — it doesn't reach. So it's really, really crucial: get your hand in the proper form.”▶ 16:04 · Piping Pitfalls: Top Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
