Donald MacPherson has been called "The most outstanding competitive piper ever to have lifted a bagpipe." He recently retired from judging the top competitions in Scotland following an unmatched track record of competitive wins on the solo competition boards. Donald is generally credited with being the first piper to achieve the modern bagpipe sound — rich, full, steady, and perfectly tuned. He as meticulous with his preparation and set up and his pipe tone was decades ahead of his time — using the traditional equipment: sheepskin pipe bag and can drone reeds.
