Circular breathing is a nifty technique used by players of wind instruments to maintain a continuous note even while breathing in. On the pipes, we have the bag that allows for a continuous sound so circular breathing is really only a skill that pipers use while playing their practice chanter. Today's post will show you how to learn this skill with a couple of videos. When you blow into your practice chanter, you exhale air from your lungs through your mouth into your chanter to produce the sound. When you stop exhaling, the air stops flowing out your mouth and the sound stops. Simple enough. Here's the basic idea of circular breathing. You start out just as I've described above, but before you run out of air in your lungs you inflate your cheeks. Then, you use the muscles of your cheeks to squeeze air into the chanter.
