Studies in Pibroch — Finding the Music Behind the Scores

This is the beginning of a series that is intended to help you, as a student of pibroch, grow confident in interpreting and performing from the primary sources of pibroch. Elsewhere I have shared with you the rich musical history of pibroch and the lessons we can learn from the earliest sources: differences in styles, in pibroch movements, in tempos and in genres. The problem is that outside of the Alt Pibroch Club, there are very few places where one can go to learn from these manuscripts: most teachers today have learned their interpretations within the strict confines of mid-20th century traditions purported going back to the late 19th Century, and/or they themselves stick with the "competition-style." We are pulling together a number of materials and assembling them into approaches that any musician can take and apply to these early manuscripts.
