As part of our activities related to next month's online competition, I thought we could start with the important but often overlooked process of selecting tunes. The first question you need to ask is What am I picking tunes for? You might select tunes to: play for fun work on skills broaden your repertoire use in performances use in competition Some factors to consider: 1. Pick tunes you like. You are more likely to stay motivated to practice if you enjoy the sound of the tunes you are learning. But also keep in mind that many great tunes often take repeated listens before you fully appreciate them. Use your personal preferences but don't let them restrict your tune choices, or you'll find yourself in a rut. 2. Pick tunes that help you work towards your future goals.
