I ran across a link at Pipes|Drums a while ago. It was to a collection of materials, commentaries upon them, and even MP3 canntaireachd performances of older version of pibroch by Dr. William Donaldson. I don't even remember how I found it. I may have been searching for more information or performances of Old Men of the Shells. It was probably on a set list or some such thing. Anyway, this is what I found: http://www.pipesdrums.com/ObjectFile.aspx?sys-Portal=57&sys-Class=Set+Tune&sys-ID=2710&sys-Attr=Audio+File Compare his singing to this: The first thing you notice is, Dr. Donaldson's version is WAY faster. Then, if you study a bit further, you'll see his version also excludes a number of variations in the standard version published by the Pio Society. As you continue studying it, you hear significant differences in expression. When you go through this process, you say to yourself, "What the heck?" And start poking around the Pio Society website.
