Your thumb on your the bottom hand is the only finger we use for piping that doesn't have a hole to indicate the proper position. As a result, it is important to make sure your thumb is in the optimal position for consistent, clean execution. Before we go any further, grab your practice chanter and put your hands in Low G position. Where is your bottom hand thumb positioned? Higher than the index finger? Directly behind the index finger? Between the index and middle finger? Directly behind the middle finger? Between the middle and ring finger? Directly across from the ring finger? or lower? If you look at top players, you will see that nearly all of them position their thumb directly behind from the middle finger or lower.
