One of my favorite piping days of the year is the first evening of the Northern Meeting Piping Competitions at Inverness. The world's greatest pipers grace the Eden Court Theatre stage to play one of the most demanding competitions anywhere: the Former Winners March, Strathspey and Reel. Pipers are required to play two of each style of tune. The late, great Alasdair Gillies won this event a world-record eleven times. Today, we'll listen archive recording from Alasdair's winning set in 1994 — winning the event and the Silver Star for the third time in four years. I was lucky to have studied with Alasdair for several years before he died much too soon., and studied each of these tunes with him. Enjoy!
