Most top solo pipers would agree that the world's most important solo competitions take place at the Northern Meeting at Inverness. Each year pipers apply for admission to this prestigious event. The premier Piobaireachd event is the Gold Medal. Pipers who have already won the Piobaireachd compete for the Gold Clasp. The entry-level Piobaireachd event is the Silver Medal. The tunes for each of these competitions change from year to year. Each piper selects four from the set tunes to learn and submit to the judges. The judges pick one. You are notified of the judge's selection as the piper just before you goes on to perform. So, a year of hard work on your set tunes and 15-20 minutes to do your final preparation backstage.
