Today's lesson features a new tune: The South Georgia Whaling Song — a traditional Gaelic air in the 6/8 time signature. I first learned this tune from Alasdair Gillies and he gave me a copy of the sheet music written in his father's own handwriting. His father, P/M Norman Gillies, was himself a well-known piper, composer, arranger and judge. Below you can download the sheet music, a recording and a video of the tune. The tune is sometimes called The Georgia Whaling Song (without the South). I prefer the full title to give a fuller description of the place named in the tune. South Georgia refers to an island in the far southern Atlantic Ocean. The island has been claimed by Great Britain for over 200 years and was an important whalers base until the significant demise of whaling in the 1960s. (Read more here about South Georgia.)
