To follow up on our recent discussion of the Darado, let's take a look at the four-parted competition-style strathspey Susan MacLeod. A few years ago, I was asked by Pipes|Drums magazine to be a member of a panel the piping experts to come up with a list of the greatest tunes of all time. After many suggestions and much discussion, the panel came up with Susan MacLeod — a strathspey composed by the great Pipe Major Donald MacLeod — as the single greatest pipe tune ever composed. Take a listen for yourself... Fantastic isn't it? And of course you can hear the Darado used to great effect in the third part. Here's the sheet music for Susan MacLeod, one of the many tunes I was given by the late, great Alasdair Gillies. He was meticulous about keeping clean, accurate settings of all of his tunes.
