New Exercise: Power D Taorluaths (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love D Taorluaths)

Taorluaths are an important embellishment in many pipe tunes but especially in Piobaireachd.We've previously discussed the Taorluath in detail and worked towards building strong, consistent technique using the Power Taorluaths exercise. As you probably already know, the Taorluath from D features a B grace note (ring finger) instead of the usual D grace note (index finger). When pipers first learn about this special exception the usual response falls somewhere between horror, disbelief, and outright indignation. The requirement to play an already challenging movement with the added challenge of using the typically less dexterous ring finger seems like a cruel joke handed down from pipers of the distant past. Nevertheless, I've learned to embrace the D Taorluath like that odd-ball band mate or family member that doesn't always fit in with everyone else but over time I've learned to appreciate.
