We pipers spend huge amounts of effort, focus, concentration and worry on memorizing our tunes. Unlike many other musicians, we play everything from memory. And also unlike many other musicians, we often play in competitions where every single note must be perfect to the written score — no extra notes, no missing ones. In Piobaireachd, the classical music of the Great Highland Bagpipe, the challenge of perfect memorization reaches its greatest heights and experienced listeners (e.g., competition judges) follow along with the written score to make sure every note of our 10-20 minute-long piece is correct.
