One of the great joys of piping in Scotland is the opportunity to compete and perform in some of the most beautiful places in the world. I almost never miss the Glenfinnan Highland Gathering, one of the highlights of the year, and arguably the most scenic location in the world for a highland games. Yes, the weather is often cold, windy, and rainy and sometimes you do get eaten alive by midges — but the history and the scenery make it all worthwhile for me. Midges can be particularly memorable for first-time visitors to Scotland. I like to describe them as a cross between the household fruit fly and a mosquito with a killer instinct and a taste for human blood. (Read more about them here.)
