There are many things that go into the thorough and complete preparation of a tune for competition or performance: learning the technique, memorizing, getting the tune up to speed, proper expression, timing, rhythm, and more. Every tune is made up of harder parts and easier parts, so after everything else is fixed and ready to go, how do you work on those remaining hard parts? How to systematically identify your trouble spots and get them sounding just as good and feeling just as confident as the easier parts? Here's my step-by-step approach to fixing the hard parts of your tunes: 1. Identify. Don't try to remember the hard parts in your head. Write them down. Circle them on the sheet music. Make a list.
