When getting a new tune performance or competition-ready, we have a long list things that need to be learned and problems that need to fixed. Most pipe tunes have some combination of tricky rhythms, a variety of technical embellishments, and often a driving tempo. With all of these challenges, you might think that pipers would have a tendency to play too slow, or to fall behind. In fact, the opposite is true. One of the biggest problems in piping is rushing or jumping beats. The harder technical and musical passages in our tunes often lead us to under-hold notes, lose control, speed up or jump to notes ahead of the beat.
