Last April, just days after putting his legendary Lawrie bagpipes up for sale, the piping world was saddened by the passing of the winningest competitive piper of all time, Donald MacPherson. You can read more about Donald at the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame, which writes about his legendary status: Donald’s performance over a truly remarkable forty years at the top of competitive piping bears this out. Just as important as his ability to compete, if not more so, however, were the innate musicality in Donald’s playing, his feeling for both pibroch and light music and the matchless quality of his sound.
