Ask any piper if they know a tune in the 5/4 time signature. If they do, it is probably Cullen Bay. (It's the only tune I know of in that time signature.) The creation of Cullen Bay is somewhat of a piping legend that goes something like this: The composer Ian Duncan (no relation to Gordon Duncan or his brother, also named Ian Duncan) wrote the tune in the more conventional 4/4 time signature. Then one night on the bus ride home from a pipe band contest, several players were playing the tune on their practice chanter. Eventually they started fooling around and holding the last note of each bar for one extra beat. Voila! 5/4! And the new version (which is very catchy) caught on and was then published as one of the only, if not THE only 5/4 march. Take a listen to the tune. See if you can tap your foot to ...
