One aspect of band that I often ponder is regarding recruitment of new talent. In a simple world we would just post an advertisement, "Four pipers needed who are familiar with the following repertoire," and we would have musicians show up at practice the next week. This method doesn't seem to work that well. However, putting up a poster that reads "come learn the practice chanter for a year and maybe try the pipes next year" doesn't work either. I was interested in a recent advertisement that I read. On this particular website there was an eight week beginner program for just over $100. At the end of this program students would be familiar with many embellishments and learn a tune. I found this approach amusing for a couple of reasons. It was a set length.
