The short notes in dot-cut tunes are the same length as the theme notes inside your embellishments. In a dot-cut pair the dotted note gets roughly 90 percent of the beat and the cut note gets a tiny sliver, whether the dot comes first or second, and even in triplets: short, short, long.
Strathspey pulsing means the beats themselves are unequal. Stretch the first and third beats and give beats two and four slightly less. You lengthen only the long-note portion of a pulsed beat; the short notes never change anywhere in the tune.
Use tools to make tempo objective. A standard metronome cannot express a strathspey, so I built pulsing levels into my Piper's Metronome app. Use the tap feature and the level system to reality-check your MSR tempos, and pick tunes and tempos you can actually manage.
