Practice Chanter Session — June 29, 2026

The Short Version

When a passage falls apart, the culprit is usually a micro-panic on the cut note. Tension and a snatching, spastic finger movement ruin the tachum. Play the notes even and relaxed first, then turn the dot-cut 'knob' up gradually until the full rhythm is clean.
Pulse your reels so they sound in two, not four. Bring out the first dotted note of each beat. Practice the pulsing heavier than you would perform it — like a teabag, you remove it and the flavor remains.
The two short notes in a long-short-short-long pattern are exactly the same length. Players unconsciously stretch the first one. I checked recordings of a famous piper who supposedly taught otherwise — even the greats play them dead even.
