Practice Chanter Session — June 2, 2025

The Short Version

Almost every embellishment starts right on the beat — only the grip and taorluath come before it. Single gracenotes, strikes, doublings, tachums, and birls all begin exactly when your foot hits the floor. Grips and taorluaths start just ahead of the beat so they finish on it.
To stop rushing a short beat note, hold the note before it. Staring at the tricky spot is like a cyclist staring at a pothole — you ride right into it. Give the preceding long note its full value and the timing problem solves itself.
Train your hands to find low G automatically. Ring finger and thumb first on the top hand, pinky and index first on the bottom, then play low G and put the chanter down. Repeat 100 times a day until you land it without wiggling.
