Piobaireachd Embellishments

The Short Version

In piobaireachd, every note is an opportunity for musical expression — including the embellishments. Play every movement slower and more open than you would in light music. The goal isn't just getting it in; it's timing it to maximize the beauty.
Almost every big variation follows one pattern: long theme note, embellishment, short finishing note. Leumluath and crunluath variations finish on a short E; the taorluath finishes on a short low A. Learn that skeleton and the later variations of nearly every tune make sense.
The abbreviations on the page pack in more than they show. A tr, an L or a T includes the G gracenote, the held theme note and the short note after the movement. The printer's symbols were never designed for bagpipes, so you have to know the conventions.
