Practice Chanter Workout Session — May 3, 2023

The Short Version

Ornaments get their timing from speed, not from shrinking the note. I show that grip-style ornaments like the otro should have no time value of their own — the trick is a fast drop, not trying to squeeze the note smaller and smaller.
Learn the timing before the technique. My core teaching method: lock in a passage's rhythm on the bare notes with a metronome first, then layer the gracenotes and doublings back in — not the reverse.
Six-eight marches never pulse. Because the offbeat eighth note sits at a fixed one-third of the beat, pulsing (the heavier-downbeat feel used in 2/4) would distort that timing, so it's never applied in 6/8.
