Practice Chanter Session — May 21, 2024

The Short Version

Good form is the foundation of everything. Soft, supple hands using the minimum muscle needed to seal the holes — a raised finger is a change of position, not a squeeze. Every fast top-hand movement gets easier when the baseline tension drops.
The short notes in your tunes are the same length as the short notes inside your embellishments. That one rule tells you whether your doublings are crushed or your playing is round. And every written 16th note in pipe music is really played as a 32nd.
Practice the exaggerated opposite of the common error. Make doublings extra open and cut notes extra short — like showing up to the airport early. When attention fades, playing backslides in a predictable direction, so build in margin.
