Learn and Master Sight Reading

The Short Version

Rhythm is the hardest part of sight reading — and the key to all of it. You learn the nine notes and the embellishment shapes early in your piping career; what trips pipers up is reading the rhythms. Clap and sing the rhythmic groupings before you ever touch the chanter.
Read embellishments as symbols, not note by note. A D throw or E doubling should register instantly by its shape, the way a stop sign registers by being a red octagon. The note that follows the embellishment is your biggest clue to what it is.
Start with jigs, then climb the ladder one tune type at a time. Jigs use only a few simple rhythmic patterns with no dot cuts. Move to 6/8 marches, then strathspeys, then simple 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 marches — each type adds just one new rhythmic layer.
