How to Master Steady Blowing

The Short Version

Steady blowing is really steady bag pressure. Your blowing is intermittent because you have to breathe, but your arm applies constant pressure the whole time — even while you're blowing into the bag. Squeeze-and-release is the mistake that makes the Bagpipe Gauge needle swing.
The pros blow about 80% of the time and inhale for 20%. I timed more than 25 videos of top players with a stopwatch: long, gradual blows and quick inhales on a 2.5 to 3 second cycle. That keeps the bag full, puts two muscle groups to work, and matches the natural breathing rate for moderate exertion.
Fix your instrument before you fix your technique. A leaky bag, loose hemp joints, or a bass drone reed taking too much air makes steadiness nearly impossible. Check reed strength and air efficiency first — closing one bass drone bridle often transforms the whole instrument.
