Get the Pipes Out! — May 16, 2025

The Short Version

If your hands are getting tired, you're working too hard. Almost everyone has plenty of strength to play the bagpipes. Tension — not weakness — is what blocks speed and cleanness. Piping is lifting fingers and dropping them; the tighter you squeeze, the harder every gracenote becomes.
The best pipers in the world all blow the same way: 80 percent blowing, 20 percent inhaling. I timed dozens of videos of top pipers with a stopwatch, and they have all converged on the same pattern. Set a metronome to 5/4 at 100 bpm — blow for four beats, inhale on one — and your gauge needle steadies almost immediately.
Steady blowing is really steady squeezing. The bag pressure only stays constant if your arm keeps pressing while you breathe in. Practice it on simple material — long low A's, scales, slow airs — so the blowing runs on autopilot before you add a hard tune.
