You can't tune your blowing pressure by ear in a pipe band. Even top-level competitive pipers can't reliably tell whose note is out once a whole band is playing. The fix is a bagpipe pressure gauge at home, so you build a feel for steady pressure you can trust without hearing yourself.
Never blow to tune a note. Adjusting your blowing pressure to fix a flat or sharp note creates a vicious cycle that makes the problem permanent. Tune your pipes with steady blowing in mind instead, using the Bagpipe Gauge to lock in pressure first.
A pre-play checklist prevents most tuning headaches. Seat your drone reeds carefully, cork the drones to test bag and valve air-tightness, check that joints move smoothly with one hand, and clean any gunk from under the flapper valve before you start tuning.
